A visionary man created Carmel.

Devendorf Park was named for him, and it is worth a visit.

We are off and running at Devendorf Park.
We could use your help on this long-term project.

When Carmel’s Forester Sara Davis added some items to our interactive  Carmel Cares Project List about Devendorf Park we got very excited. This is one of our favorite places in Carmel because it is chocked full of interesting history, statues, memorials, incredible tree specimens and a beautiful grassy area on which to sit and relax. Every year special events take place here, the most recent being a social justice gathering while COVID restrictions were in place. We have been working with Sara to define needed projects, and our Volunteers and professional gardeners have been making progress including:

  • Improving visibility into the park from outside by lowering the hedges, removing some tired plants and trimming the camellias.
  • Improving visibility to the incredible large oak at the southwest corner
  • Creating an attractive and simple garden area around the 9/11 memorial
  • Removing all invasive ivy from the park
  • Thinning the agapanthus and repurposing some to Sunset Center
  • Cleaning the parking lot at Park Branch Library and adding a cute Carmel-by-the-Sea “Monster” and refreshed surrounding garden at the Park Branch Library across the street
  • Many more improvements are being planned

Join us if you want to have the satisfaction of making Devendorf Park more beautiful, safer, and more inviting. That’s what we do! So, if you are interested in helping click on the button above or below and send us a note. We will be putting more information about Devendorf, the man and the park here along with pictures of this lovely setting. If you want to learn more about it you can take our VoiceMap GPS audio tour called Downtown Carmel in an Hour. You can find it here, download it and take the tour using your mobile phone. You’ll learn a lot about our Village and some businesses in it. You can also take the tour on your computer in a blog format here.
